Breast Reduction: What You Need to Know

Women with significantly large breasts experience physical ailments that can include neck pain, backaches and numbness in fingers and hands. Migraines, shortness of breath and self-consciousness are also common in women with overly large breasts. If you seek relief for any of these conditions, a breast reduction may be right for you.

Are You a Candidate?
To determine if you’re a candidate for breast reduction surgery, start by asking yourself the following questions:

  • Are you a non-smoker?
  • Are you in good health?
  • Do you suffer from pain in your back, neck or shoulders due to your breasts?
  • Do you feel like your breasts get in the way of physical activity?
  • Do your bra straps leave indentations on your shoulders because of your breasts?
  • Do you have realistic expectations about the results of breast reduction?

If you answered yes to any or all of these questions, it may be time to consider breast reduction surgery.

About the Procedure
Breast reduction surgery is performed under general anesthesia and involves removing at least one pound of tissue and fat cells from each breast, followed by cutting away the excess skin. Sometimes the nipple will need to be removed and repositioned, but this procedure is becoming less prevalent. The surgery usually lasts 2 to 4 hours, and side-effects are minimal. Because the surgery entails removing only tissue and skin, rather than muscles and organs, most patients experience only mild discomfort for the first few days after surgery. After breast reduction surgery, it will likely be necessary to wear a compression garment as you recover to help reduce swelling. And while some visible scars result from the procedure, most women consider the trade-off of having minimal scars instead of aches and pains to be well worth it.
