Smartlipo®: An Alternative to Traditional Liposuction

Liposuction is one of the most common cosmetic procedures in the country, and in recent years, major technological advances have been made to improve the process. Now, with advanced techniques such as Smartlipo®, even more people are opting to to undergo body contouring procedures.

If you’re not familiar with Smartlipo® but are considering body contouring, take a look at the most frequently asked questions about the procedure.

What are the benefits of Smartlipo vs. traditional liposuction? Smartlipo is a minimally invasive procedure that uses a laser to melt fat. Because of the laser, there is significantly less bleeding, swelling and bruising than in traditional liposuction. The recovery time is also faster – patients can usually resume work in two days, versus a week with traditional liposuction. In addition, Smartlipo requires only local anesthetic, as opposed to liposuction which places patients under full anesthesia. Since only one very small incision is made in the skin, no stitches are needed with Smartlipo.

How does Smartlipo work? This procedure uses a specially designed laser that is inserted in the skin through a tiny tube to target a specific area. The laser simultaneously melts fat cells and coagulates skin tissue, removing stubborn fat and tightening the surrounding skin. The melted fat can then either be suctioned out or absorbed into the bloodstream. Your doctor is able to view the laser through the skin to ensure precision.

Is Smartlipo right for me? The best candidate for Smartlipo is a healthy adult close to or at their ideal weight. It is important to have realistic expectations going into the procedure, recognizing that it cannot be used for significant weight loss, but rather as a means to smooth and sculpt targeted areas of the body.

Are the results permanent? Results can be permanent, as long as patients maintain a healthy weight through diet and exercise.
